Mitchell was born to Donovan Mitchell Sr. and Nicole Mitchell. He shares the same parents with younger his sister, Jordan Mitchell.

Mitchell’s early years were spent near Major League Baseball locker rooms. At the age of seven, he idolized Scott Kazmir, a standout pitcher in the Mets’ minor league system, and later David Wright, who was the subject of the very first poster he ever posted on his wall.

He participated in AAU basketball with the New York City-based teams The City and Riverside Hawks. Mitchell was present in 2010 when LeBron James made his decision to sign with the Miami Heat at the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich, Connecticut.

After graduating from Greenwich Country Day School in Greenwich, Connecticut, Mitchell spent his first two years of high school at Canterbury School in New Milford. He continued his education at the University of Louisville after graduating.

Donovan Mitchell career

With the 13th overall choice in the 2017 NBA Draft, Mitchell was selected by the Denver Nuggets. He was then dealt to the Utah Jazz in exchange for the 24th pick (Tyler Lydon) and Trey Lyles. Mitchell and the Jazz agreed to a four-year rookie scale contract on July 5, 2017.

Mitchell and Adidas agreed to a multi-year shoe contract on July 11, 2017. Later on that day, Mitchell recorded the highest point total of any player during the 2017 NBA Summer League as he defeated the Memphis Grizzlies in Las Vegas with 37 points.

On October 18, 2017, Mitchell made his NBA debut against the Denver Nuggets, scoring 10 points and dishing out four assists. He had a career-high 41 points on December 1, 2017, as the Phoenix Suns defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 114-108.

Mitchell received the Western Conference Rookie of the Month award for December 2017 on January 4, 2018, for averaging 23.1 points, 3.4 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.8 steals in 34.3 minutes of play per game.

When Mitchell had his 19th 20+ point game on January 15, 2018, he overtook Karl Malone’s record for the most 20+ point games in a rookie season. Against the Phoenix Suns on February 2, 2018, Mitchell had his second 40-point performance of the season, becoming the first rookie guard to do so since Allen Iverson in 1996–1997.

Aaron Gordon of the Orlando Magic suffered a strained left hip flexor, so the NBA picked Donovan as Gordon’s replacement for the 2018 NBA Slam Dunk Contest on February 5, 2018.

On April 15, Mitchell faced the Oklahoma City Thunder in his first postseason game, and he finished with 27 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists. Although he was doubtful for Game 2 due to a foot injury he sustained during the first game, he was able to participate and scored 28 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, to help the Jazz defeat the Suns 102-95.

Mitchell had a season-high 38 points on October 24, 2018, as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Houston Rockets 100-89. In a 106-102 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on January 25, 2019, Mitchell notched his first and only double-double of the year with 24 points and 11 assists.

Mitchell won the Western Conference Player of the Week award for the week of January 6–13 thanks to his five 30-point performances in the month of January, three of which were back-to-back.

Mitchell tied his season-high 38 points on February 22 against the Oklahoma City Thunder in a 148-147 double overtime loss. Mitchell had a career-high 46 points on March 2 in a 115-111 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

On October 23, 2019, Mitchell scored 32 points and dished out 12 assists in the team’s 105-95 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder to start the 2019–20 campaign. Mitchell was selected as a Western Conference reserve for the 2021 NBA All-Star Game on February 23, making it his second straight All-Star appearance.

Mitchell was chosen as a Western Conference reserve for the 2022 NBA All-Star Game on February 3, making it his third straight All-Star appearance.

Mitchell was dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers on September 1, 2022, along with Lauri Markkanen, Collin Sexton, Ochai Agbaji, three first-round picks, and two pick swaps.
